Precious Things is a song from Tori Amos’ debut album ”Little Earthquakes” in which the singer-songwriter tells us about painfull events happening to her during her teenage years. The text basically paints the picture of a girl experiencing intense cruelty amongst a group of adolescents. She wrote the song in her early 20’s, looking back on this chapter of her life, trying to find ways to realease her pain. We do have both the girl’s and the young woman’s point of views expressed here.Tori Amos named it “Precious Things” ironically, since we all figured out that this song contains no pleasant memories.
She briefly describes what hurt her in this period of her life :
A boy with whom she seems to have been in a some kind of sexual relationship called her “an ugly girl”, but he liked the way she “played”. Despise that fact and even though it caused her sadness, she oddly thanked him. Daily, while dressing up she looked at his picture probably needing his approval or trying to prove him wrong.
Another theme here is other girls’ viciousness she’s a victim of. She describes them as “demi-gods with nine inche nails in liitle fascist panties tucked inside the heart of every nice girl”.
As a grown up person still suffering from all of that, she tries to let go by “letting it bleed and wash away”.
She sometimes sang the song live with additional lyrics such as “Wash me clean Daddy, wash this thing Daddy.” A good example is the Live Rainn version you can find on the most famous video website becoming by You and finishing by Tube.

For every woman who ever was this girl, this song provides the catharsis she's trying to invoke. Amazing, harsh, beautiful song.

I still enjoy this song's more introspective piano live version than the one with the whole band. Anyway, this never gets wrong.

i just can't bring myself to use "cum" seriously. i guess i was just hissing because that guy assumed i wasn't using the words interchangeably.

@ absolla, to be fair, the official LE booklet does list them as "cum". :) This is probably THE song i'd recommend to a newbie wanting to hear Tori.

oh and to the condescending bro who called me honey down there: i don't use the spelling cum because it's what 14 year olds use when they're cybering. i elevated the spelling to come. but thanks for the concern, dear.
