How They Suffer is a tribute to both Gira and Jarboe's parents, both of whom were dying while Soundtracks of the Blind was arranged. Robert Gira passed away before the album was released. "I used a snip of one of those interviews on “How They Suffer”, which also has Jarboe recording her mother, who was descending into dementia.
