Robert Tressell (17 April 1870 – 3 February 1911) was the pseudonym of Robert Noonan (born Robert Croker), an Irish writer best known for his novel "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists". Robert Tressell was born in Dublin, in Ireland (at the time, part of the United Kingdom). He was the illegitimate son of Samuel Croker, a senior member of the Royal Irish Constabulary. He was christened Robert Croker in the Roman Catholic Church. His father, who was not Catholic, had his own family, but attempted to provide for Robert financially before his death in 1875.
