Stalker was inspired by the 1979 Soviet science fiction art film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky and contains speech samples therefrom. The cover image is a photograph from the 1986 Remntants series by the critically acclaimed landscape photographer Brad Cole. Stalker is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of dark ambient music.
