I prefer this to Mecca & the Soul Brother, though I think in terms of intricacies Mecca takes the cake. You can definitely tell that Pete Rock was sort of gradually easing off the jazzy flavor he had on their debut by making the brass samples not as evident as well as having more R&B-ish choruses/productions. There just to seems to be a little more variation with the songs on Mecca & the Soul Brother that makes it not sound as formulaic. I think Midnight Marauders had a little bit to do with this evolution in Pete's production, I can't complain about it though because I that's one of my favorite albums and the beats were just as great as before. I wouldn't say C.L. Smooth didn't really change or improve any from album to album, this was really Pete's show in my eyes.

"The album was a favorite of the late producer J Dilla, who played it while meeting with Pete Rock to record Slum Village's "Once Upon A Time" for the album, Fantastic, Vol. 2 in 1998." Wiki.
