Shit music

Another one of those generic bashing my top artists journals, sorry for puitting you to sleep...
Anyway
1. The Gathering- Your first albums sucked, hard..except one song. You guys aren't amazing musicians either just Anneke and the backing band:) and PLEASE don't EVER do an acoustic version of In motion #2 again.
2. Kari Rueslåtten- You might have a great voice but use a little more versatility hah? and you pretty much suck at your lower register. Plus stop writing lyrics about your boyfriend not loving you, maybe he thinks your ugly and doesn't like your singing, I don't blame him either.
3. Opeth- BLOWPETH is more like it. Stupid pretensious wankers putting nintendo noises in your music, that's not Progressive Mikael, just fucking ghey
4. Porcupine Tree- LAME, your music sounds the same, well most of it. Steven Wilson can't sing for shit either. What a dickhead.
5. Draconian- OHMYGOSH LOOK AT HOW DEEP WE ARE WRITING LYRICS ABOUT SORROW AND CRYING ABOUT PAIN...blah, work on your lyrics and Lisa PLEASE stop singing so high, makes me ears bleed. Death, come near me? are you guys trying to turn into an emo band now?
6. The 3rd and the Mortal- Could a band be this boring?? I think so. Holy shit Memoirs sucked, crap vocals+wannabe avantgarde bullshit=WANK.
7. Madder Mortem- Oh no here we have another female fronted metal act, what makes you stand out above the rest? NOTHING plus the singer sounds like a man/dragqueen or there's something stuck in her throat and looks like Micheal Jackon in most photos.
8. My Dying Bride- BORING. You're shit. Just another stupid doom metal band with depressive lyrics and slow as fuck drumming *yawn*, Aaron belongs in a fucking institute. LOL I almost forgot one of the most horrid names for a band ever.
9. Tristania- *OK GUYS, LETS PUT A GOTH BITCH WITH RIDICULOUSLY BIG TITS INFRONT AND MAKE IT SERIOUS* bascially sums them up. Crappy gothic band, soon enough they'll be along side My chemical romance wearing eyeliner and tight pants trying to emphasise the penis they don't have(yes, Mary included).
10. Dreams of Sanity- Pathetic, your first 2 albums put me to sleep. Without Sandra's non boring voice this band would've been a complete turd. Also the cheese factor couldn't been any higher. -

Hooks
16 Nov 2008, 04:58 by Lazarene
One thing that sometimes catches my interest when listening to a song for the first time is a fleeting sense of heightened clarity and intent brought forward by the vocalist. This is usually manifested in a combination of concise lyrics and some unquantifiable sense that the vocalist really fucking means it. It's usually during (the nearest equivalent to) the song's chorus, and though rarely lasting more than a few seconds, these hooks are often a driving motivator for me to listen to the song repeatedly.
Here are a few of my favourites, off hand:
Cathedral – “
All Your Sins”. This cover of the Pentagram track can be found on the ‘In Memoriam’ EP. Anyone familiar with this release will possibly share the sentiment that it’s a moderately gruelling listen, and best listened to in small chunks. The track starts off inoffensively with a stoner intro and some retarded groove, and things don’t get interesting until the growled “chorus”. The final, post-guitarsolo chorus is where Lee Dorrian truly shines though. His belching of
“YOU CAN NEVUR WIN. PRAAY. FOR AWWL YOR SINS.” is delivered with the undulating, sarcastic and twisted contortions that characterised Cathedral’s recent albums, yet filtered through this wretched snarl, like a fucked-up death row dog trying to molest the wardens. It’s positively unstable sounding, a dribbling manic depressive trying to fight off force-fed sedatives. Sort of like Tyler Durden’s ‘You dunno where I’ve been’ scene but with popped eyes and a massive, self medicated grin. It leads nicely into
Ebony Tears, which sounds like a bitter satire of the death-doom that would arise in later years.
Esoteric – “
The Blood of the Eyes”. Let me begin by stating as fact that the first four minutes of this 12’36” beast are among the most transcendental I’ve ever cummed across. It’s fucking visionary stuff, mindblowing. The sort of icy, hypercognitive supreme clarity that drowning in meltwater would bring. It’s the single most epic piece of musicianship I’ve ever heard, without exaggeration, and I’m not even much of a fan of this crazy band. Compositionally speaking, it’s got everything at once, the intro kicks off with the main slow, wavering, reverb-drenched riff and sympathising synth melody/drift, soon accompanied with some soft drumming, creating a soft, dreamy and deep atmosphere. The vocals and ‘heavy’ guitars kick in like a glacial avalanche, an unstoppable force. The whole passage in question is underscored by a godly, astral-flotation guitar solo, slow and molten, which morphs seamlessly from the intro. And holy fuck, this is unbelievably awesome… it takes the guy a full thirty seconds to finish the first line ‘I haven’t seen myself for ages’. It’s delivered in a belching, stargazing, all-devouring roar… there’s nothing sinister or scary about this two minutes of music, the guy just sounds like he’s acquired all the knowledge in the universe, and every emotion ever felt by anyone is entering and exploding his skull in bullet-time, nothing more.
“This empty shell cares no longer for life.
Slowly replacing the flesh with steel,
So that I may carry on...
Unfettered by this mortality.
The air no longer carries favour,
The water that passes these lips
Keeps only this mortal shell alive”
I cannot help but be physically affected by this track every time I hear it, the opening is inspirational and crushing and heartstopping. The only way I can safely listen to this is on earphones when I’m sitting alone in a comfortable place, and in a neutral state of mind. Why the fuck do we even choose to stay alive?
Mayhem – “
Completion In Science Of Agony (Pt. I Of II)” This is the longest track on Grand Declaration of War, Mayhem’s opinion-polarizing 2000 excursion, and like most of the rest of the album it’s reasonably experimental. As far as I’m concerned, what makes this track stand out in a negative sense is, paradoxically for this context, the vocals. The first half is lead by some old school heavy metal vocals that sound typically annoying. Too much vibrato, balls in a clamp, you know the score. The second half of the track is Maniac’s pathetic choking-duck/steel scraping on rough concrete vocals, not much better. The reason I mention this track here is for a brief ‘diamond in the shitheap’ that crops up right at the halfway mark, in the form of a serpentine remark “The suffering of a thousand voices”. There’s some phase effect or something going on with this utterance, it sounds sort of evil in any case. It’s hard to describe why this one whispered line is effective, perhaps it’s solely because the rest of the track sucks so much. It’s very misanthropic and sincere sounding, I guess the nearest comparison in contemporary popular culture would be the Joker’s ubiquitous “Why so seriouss?” quip, it sounds pretty similar. The track itself ends with Maniac’s ducky rasping of ‘yesss yess yess!’, followed by some offended robot-voice chirping out ‘Pain…’. I reckon the stroke of vocal win in the middle of this track is nothing but a fluke, unless like an idiot savant I’m missing some all-encompassing, avant-garde deeper meaning that lies behind Mayhem’s motivations. Doubtful though. One of the later tracks on here (
To Daimonion (Pt. II of III)) is nothing but four and a half minutes of silence that follow someone (probably Keanu Reeves) saying in a bored voice
“I remember the future
A new beginning of time”
…shithead.
Agalloch – “
A Poem By Yeats”
‘A girl arose that had red mournful lips
And seemed the greatness of the world in tears,
Doomed like Odysseus and the labouring ships
And proud as Priam murdered with his peers;’
This is a passage from W.B. Yeats’ excellent existentialist romantic poem ‘The Sorrow of Love’ that forms the lyrical fodder for this Agalloch track from their 2001 EP Of Stone, Wind and Pillor. The whole track is very relaxed and pastoral sounding, discounting the four minutes of silence that conceal the useless ‘hidden track’. It continues from the droning atmospheres of the previous track, and descends further into a somniferous paste of folky warmth. The first stanza is sung, in the traditional sense, over some warmbience and tasteful piano, but the track really comes into fruition on the second stanza which is spoken word, presumably by John Haughm. There’s something timeless about this great adaptation, and it holds some nostalgic sway for me on a personal level - it reminds me of late afternoons that I spent cycling on Louth’s country roads last summer. It’s great to see recognition of this Irish literary great in one of my favourite styles of music, and the second stanza especially captures the autumnal sombreness that is concurrently the focus of this poem and this EP as a whole. I could also mention Agalloch’s profoundly moving track ‘Tomorrow Will Never Come’ but after some (google-centric) research I found that the vocals here are pulled directly from some interviews with a real-life schizophrenic youth, which basically discounts a lot of the wonder in a compositional sense. It’s still a trippy listen though, and recommended.
My Dying Bride – “
The Cry of Mankind”
The siren-like quality of those opening six notes doesn’t let up for the entire 12+ minutes of this song, giving even goregrind a run for its money in terms of repetitiveness. This doesn’t detract from the balmy greatness of the vocals though. The lyrics are very concise and massively effective, a morose sonnet that is delivered gently by a Stainthorpe that sounds more genuinely depressed here on The Angel and the Dark River than on MDB’s later stuff. It’s most potent on the last line, which is exhaled more than sung. The corresponding lyrics are ‘This is a weary hour’ but we hear ‘thisih… weary…’. In lesser hands, such withdrawn aspirations would sound contrived and naff but here it’s actually damned effective, and it succumbs nicely to an extended outro that serves as a trippy dessert to the self-loathing Gothicism that characterises the body of the song. -
