Formed in East Lansing, Michigan in 1991, the duo of Lovesliescrushing consists of Scott Cortez (guitars) and Melissa Arpin-Duimstra (vocals). They are an ambient/noise group that uses the shoegaze/dream pop sound as a starting point, but drop conventional song structures, and focus on highly textured and otherworldly soundscapes. Guitarist Scott Cortez’s use of his guitar in conjunction with loop devices, e-bow, paint scrapers, forks, knives, vibrators, violin bows, etc. to create lush, swirling tones dissociated with guitar has caused critics/reviewers to mistake them for using keyboards. Their sound is typified by a signature lack of drums, glossolalia, dense billowing chordal clusters, massive sheets of whitenoise, delicate looped backwound figures implying abstract rhythms and ambient freeform instrumentals.
They have released five full-lengths to date, all recorded with a simple 4-track recorder, including their latest release, Chorus, which was done completely in acapella.

Well I say experimental without any particular groups perspective but as a word that defines breaking ground and messing with the general boundaries which genres would define. I don't use the words definition as dictated by last.fm. Also, im mainly talking about their earlier sound, I haven't heard glissceule yet but Chorus is using unconventional sounds again and at points is quite abstract. Anyway, agreed mostly I think, perspectives permitting heh.

I don't know how you'd call Glissceule or Chorus noise, but to each his/her own. Yeah I agree with you Lanartur but that is why i used ambient. lt feels has Scott has a message specifiably direct to convey here though not seen in his other projects. And with this site, I've gathered a distaste for the term "experimental" so much that I'd feel i would be insulting them by calling them that.

Well I guess ambient is a good term to use, though I think it too much of a broad definition for them when they are not exactly purely conventional ambience. I mean they have ambient tendencies, just like they have noise tendencies and shoegaze. When I say I would like to hear more bands bring forward the shoegaze scene I mean bands that take it upon themselves to be as experimental and diverse as this while housing some of the core tendencies, which they certainly do. Anyway, genre discussions are pretty mute. There are many words that could be used to define parts of their music. Certainly not a straightforward catergorisation, experimental is the only one that will be just on the diversity included.

They are an ambient group. If anyone wants MBV worship or just solid shoegaze they can loot the noises of Astrobrite and Star. They have more in common with Eno and other acts like Main than anyone else I think. I don't like calling it shoegaze (Yes it's obviously somewhat rooted in but look beyond that) and I'd think it would be extremely boring and banal if everyone trying to convey such a term was to suddenly start copying them purposely..I said he was an inspiration down there but I'd be the last to loot this treasure..as it would be anything BUT an experiment.

Not to pigeonhole them though, I like to think they build on the similarities of texture within the more traditional shoegaze terminology to create those atmospheric backgrounds. But obviously there are ties to ambience also. Just putting aside the genrelisations, they are too good to lump in with any particular field.

This band is special, Shoegaze/noise with those dream pop vocals. I love the way the context seems to come out of nowhere, really anyone with patience into these genres will grow to love this band. I think they really are one of the best things to ever happen for shoegaze, and I would certainly like to hear more bands that take the sound forward like this and experiment.

Scott Cortez is an inspiration, he's never purveyed a sound that didn't exude just-bliss, and Melissa Arpin-Duimstra's vocals are just breathtakingly beautiful aswell..

One of my favorite bands. I'm glad they aren't "hip to know" or whatever, yet. They won't be appreciated when they are. That's why I care, so any further "who cares" would be belated and pointless. I didn't say popular or well known, I sad "hip."

And Glissceule too. :( Maybe because Projekt doesn't hold the copyright for those two albums?
