"Philemon Arthur & the Dung" was written by Janove Ottesen, and is the first single from their sixth studio album, Violeta Violeta Volume I. The song was written during a major creative period for Ottesen, and was one of the new songs premiered in early 2010 during the Studio Tour, along with "Femtakt filosofi", and "Sju bøtter tårer er nok, Beatrice". Recordings of all three songs were "bootlegged" by the band themselves, and subsequently released to the public. The single was released on 24 August 2010. In October, "Philemon Arthur & the Dung" was put on the a-list of Norwegian radio station P3, giving the song major airplay rotation.

In Ottesen's words, the song is "a tribute to the beautiful things in life, that you wish would never end". The song's title and refrain are a reference to Swedish group Philemon Arthur and the Dung, of which Kaizers Orchestra are admitted fans; the lyrics also makes oblique references to "In kommer Gösta", a song by said group which Kaizers Orchestra had spontaneously covered during a performance of "Kontroll på kontinentet" in Sweden in 2008.
