It was composed in 1946–1948, shortly after Cage's introduction to Indian philosophy and the teachings of art historian Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, both of which became major influences on the composer's later work. Significantly more complex than his other works for prepared piano, Sonatas and Interludes is generally recognized as one of Cage's finest achievements.

oops, i was as wrong as the album cover, this isn't Boris Berman's somewhat slow intepretation (whom i listened to on iTunes). this is actually Maro Ajemian playing, as vivid as Margaret Leng Tan's 21st century recording. BTW "contemporary classical"? John Cage composed the Sonatas 60 years ago, in 1948, this first recording was issued in 1951. BTW [2] what makes composed piano sonatas "experimental"? the extended technique? just asking.

Boris Berman uses a less prepared piano and seems to be less prepared for Cage's new musical idiom at the time the album was recorded. these pieces sound cleaner and more "tamed" than John Cage might have intended.

I love this so much. There is something of the logic of it that always reminds me of birdsong.
