  • Amy Speace To Perform Joe's Pub 10th Anniversary Gala

    2 Oct 2008, 14:35 by musicdish

New York, NY - Grassy Hill Entertainment artist Amy Speace will be joining an impressive line-up during Joe's Pub 10th Anniversary Gala in tribute to legendary musician, champion of emerging artists, and New Yorker Judy Collins. The Gala will take place on October 10th and will begin with a celebration dinner at The Chinatown Brasserie and will continue at the Anspacher Theater at The Public Theater for the Judy Collins Tribute.

Produced by Joe's Pub and Katherine DePaul (President, Wildflower Records) Joe's Pub 10th Anniversary Gala will be hosted by legendary WFUV DJ, Pete Fornatale and will honor Judy Collins' impressive career that has spanned nearly 50 years, her commitment to the music industry, and her history with the Public Theater.

The benefit tribute concert will coincide with the release of 'Born To The Breed - A Tribute to Judy Collins, Vol. I' due for release October 14th on Wildflower Records. The disc features Amy Speace alongside the likes of legends Dolly Parton, Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Chrissie Hynde, James Murdriczki, Jim Lauderdale, Leonard Cohen, Dar Williams, Bernadette Peters, ALI ESKANDARIAN, Joan Baez, Kenny White, Jimmy Webb, and The Webb Sisters.

From the rustic rush of "PlayStep Out of the Shade" to the bittersweet lilt of "Water Landing" to the gentle acoustic intimacy of "Two," Songs for Bright Street's 12 original compositions (plus a slyly countrified reading of the Blondie classic "Dreaming") showcase Speace's unique gifts, offering catchy Americana with indelible hooks, sharply observed lyrics and a gritty urban edge. Among those impressed by her sassy songcraft is legendary folk-pop songstress Judy Collins, who chose Songs for Bright Street to release on her new Wildflower label.

Amy Speace has already won a loyal grass-roots fan base, thanks in large part to live performances that merge warmth, humor and emotional immediacy, and to a tireless touring schedule that's already taken her across the United States. She's also won considerable critical acclaim, with The Village Voice observing that Speace is "taking her Americana away from twangy contemplation toward tangy confrontation" and noting that she's "not another of those breathy would-be child poets, but a real singing writer of songs."

  • And the winners are...

    19 Sep 2008, 19:31 by jcshepard

Americana Music Association 2008 Winners were announced in a big shindig at the Ryman in Nashville on Thursday night:

Album of the year: Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Raising Sand

Artist of the year: Levon Helm

Duo/Group of the year: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant

Instrumentalist of the year: Buddy Miller

New emerging artist of the year: Mike Farris

Song of the year: “PlayShe Left Me For Jesus,” written by Hayes Carll and Brian Keane, and performed by Hayes Carll

“Spirit of Americana” Free Speech In Music: Joan Baez

    Lifetime Achievement/Songwriting: John Hiatt

Jack Emerson Lifetime Achievement/Executive: Terry Lickona

Lifetime Achievement/Performance: Jason and the Scorchers

    President’s Award: Jerry Garcia

    Lifetime Achievement/Instrumentalist: Larry Campbell

    Trailblazer: Nanci Griffith

    Lifetime Achievement/Producer/Engineer: Tony Brown

Thanks to The Tennessean online (I wasn't there and the AMA isn't doing the job promoting their own stuff--guess they figure those who need to know are already at the event):
these folks — Robert Plant, Joan Baez, John Hiatt, Nanci Griffith, Levon Helm, Jason and the Scorchers, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, Steve Earle and so many others — were bound by the amorphous "Americana" designation, by a love of American roots music and by the shared feeling that genre divisions are among the sillier of musical (or anti-musical) notions.

Paste Magazine has some nice pics online.

I liked Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin days. I still think the love shown the Rock Star is a bit odd, but apparently the aging Rock star is smitten, says Country Standard Time:
Plant and Krauss talked about their experiences after winning each award. Plant said after taking the duo/group honor, "I was never in a band where anybody else could sing. I like it better like this." Americana Roots blog has the full scorecard from the awards show.

So how'd I do on my predictions? I didn't MAKE predictions this year. Am I surprised? Not really. I thought Steve Earle would get artist of the year, tho. And who the hell is Mike Farris??? JT Earle, Ryan Bingham, The Steeldrivers (on MrModernRock's endorsement), any of them no problem. Go figure.

    11 Sep 2008, 22:33 by JusticeShades

Here's a list of last.fm's recommendations for me. Post if any of the bands are worth checking out, and maybe post a recommended album.

Clutch - Haven't heard of them, but stoner rock seems cool.
    Fu Manchu - See: Clutch
Testament - I really like thrash, so I don't see why not.
    Sodom - Y?
Gov't Mule - Dunno, not really big on jam bands.
    Blues Traveler - Who?
Screaming Trees - I really like Nearly Lost You, so, sure.
Dinosaur Jr. - I may sound like an idiot for saying this, but... who?
Blackfield - Hmm, if Steven Wilson's in it...
Pain of Salvation - I have Remedy Lane already, but I haven't taken the time to listen to it.
    Overkill - Sure, why not.
Mark Lanegan - Why should I, if I'm hardly familiar with the Screaming Trees?
King Diamond - I heard him sing on the Probot album and it was all right.
Monster Magnet - See: Clutch, Fu Manchu
Destruction - Yeah, sure. I think I need more thrash.
Mercyful Fate - I heard many good things about them. Might be worth looking into.
High on Fire - See: Clutch, Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet
UFO - I heard they were one of Metallica's influences, along with Thin Lizzy, Diamond Head and money.
    Bathory - I dunno, I don't think I really like black metal.
    Manowar - I dunno, I don't think I really like power metal.
OM - I've never even heard Sleep. I think I'll listen to Sleep first, then check these guys out.
Obituary - If these guys are anywhere as good as Death or Atheist, I might check them out.
Earth - Haven't heard of these guys, other than the fact that the frontman bought Kurt Cobain's shotgun for him.
George Thorogood - I may have heard him on classic rock radio.
    Celtic Frost - Maybe.
Stiff Little Fingers - Never heard of them.
    Sunn O))) - I do)))n't kno)))w, what do))) yo)))u guys think?

Nazareth - I like their cover of Love Hurts.
    Therapy? - Maybe?
The Pretenders - I heard a bit of their stuff. Not bad.
Fates Warning - Never heard of them.
Grand Funk Railroad - Homer Simpson's favourite band.
Simon & Garfunkel - I like Mrs. Robinson and Sound of Silence, so I guess I might check them out.
Sleep - See: Clutch, Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet, High On Fire
    Halford - A metal god.
Joan Baez - Don't know much about her, other than the fact that she married Bob Dylan.
Butthole Surfers - I hope the music doesn't suck as much as their name.
At the Drive-In - Hey, it's the guys from the Mars Volta!
Minutemen - They sound neat, but Double Nickels on the Dime is so huge, it's kind of intimidating.
Boredoms - Never heard of them.
Napalm Death - YOU SUFFER, BUT WHY?!
L7 - They sound pretty cool.
Warren Zevon - RIP, man. No one, no matter what they've done, could deserve being sampled by Kid Rock. :(
My Bloody Valentine - I hope they don't suck as much as Bullet for My Valentine. Otherwise...
Arch Enemy - I've heard many things about this band (mostly bad), but the idea of a female singer in a death metal band is terrifying and slightly intriguing.
The Damned - I've heard New Rose, and that's a pretty good song, so I guess I should check them out.
The Jesus Lizard - Never heard of them other than the fact that they did a split with Nirvana.
Hüsker Dü - Judging by the umlauts in their name, they must be a stereotypical 80s metal band, amirite?
    Wipers - Who?
    Mission of Burma - Who?
    Flipper - Who?
Shellac - wtf is math rock
Supertramp - Sorry, that annoying Gym Class Heroes song prevents me from enjoying Breakfast in America.
Samhain - I'm familiar with both Misfits and Danzig, so why not?
S.O.D. - Not very familiar with crossover thrash.
    Sebadoh - Who?
Possessed - I need more old school death metal and Bay Area thrash, so this band is two birds with one stone.
Richard Hell and the Voivods - Who?
Witchcraft - Heard before. Pretty good.
Swans - I like cheerful relaxing music. Would you recommend them?
Dark Tranquillity - I don't know too much about melodic death metal, but these guys seem like a good start.
In Flames - Like Dark Tranquility, but I've heard a lot of band things about their newer material.
John Frusciante - I like the Chili Peppers, so sure, I guess I'll look into it.
Cult of Luna - I don't know what "post-metal" is, but it sounds intriguing.
The Ocean - See: Cult of Luna
Baroness See: Cult of Luna, The Ocean
Gang of Four - That's a band I hear a lot about, but know nothing of.
Marillon - I heard their new album is like In Rainbows or Ghosts I-IV so I might get it.
Cathedral - I've always been interested in doom, so I might check them out.
    13th Floor Elevators - Who?
    Big Star - Who?
Spock's Beard - See: Butthole Surfers.
Ryan Adams - Why not? Summer of '69 is a pretty cool song. /sarcasm
Acid Bath - Lord_Krichian's recommendation, which was actually recommended by last.fm a while ago.

Bands I Have Already Checked Out:
Pain of Salvation - Pretty good. Sounds like a heavier Dream Theater or a lighter Opeth. Whatever.
Samhain - It comes as no surprise that I like these guys, seeing as I'm a fan of both the Misfits and Danzig.
Sleep - They're all right. Sounds a bit too much like Black Sabbath for my liking, but still good.
Mercyful Fate - Quite good. The dueling guitars and dramatic vocals remind me of Judas Priest.
My Bloody Valentine - From what I heard, quite interesting and textured. Like Smashing Pumpkins but with better vocals.
Dinosaur Jr. - Cool band. The guitars are noisy and sonic youthful.
Screaming Trees - Very good. They remind me of a lot of Seattle grunge bands without being derivative.
High On Fire - Not as cool as I'd expect them to be. Cool riffs, but not that impressive. I'll give them some time to grow on me.
Husker Du - Very impressive. I hear a lot of energy and creativity in their songs.
At the Drive-In - Pretty good. Surprisingly has little in common with the Mars Volta.
Butthole Surfers - WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?? But anyways, pretty weird and challenging listening.
Bathory - The vocals, although a bit hoarse, are actually pretty melodic and listenable, and it's highly melodic. Maybe black metal isn't that bad...
Simon & Garfunkel - Really good, but I think a little bit too soft for my tastes.
Celtic Frost - I like 'em. Reminds me a lot of Venom.
Heart - Just as good as I remembered!
Talking Heads - Pretty awkward and jerky. And I mean that in the best way possible.
Boredoms - Kinda weird, but I like it.
In Flames - Meh, it's okay. Catchy for death metal.
Arch Enemy - It's okay. Are you sure that's a woman?

I'll cut it off there, because:
    1. I've spammed enough
    2. I'm tired of typing

Please tell me what you think of these artists and which ones you would personally recommend.

  • Evolution of my musical taste

    30 Aug 2008, 13:50 by Blasfemic

This is a thing I've been trying to write down for some time now.

The evolution of your musical taste is a really interesting thing. Trough the years I've been listening to many different music styles - of which some left a considerable mark in my life and some were just a "come and go" and actually never really affected me much.

So let's go trough some of my personal music history. As now I passed my 20th birthday I got somewhere about 10 years of music history behind me and this should be a small flashback trough the years.

One of first bands I started listening to were The Beatles due to my fathers influence since he had lot's of old school records. From that time I also remember Neil Young and Joan Baez (that kind of died in my taste although some songs are still nice like PlayDiamonds and Rust – specially the Blackmore's Night cover).

To mention here is also my first original album which was from Zmelkoow (at that time and also now a very popular Slovenian rock band with funny lyrics and chill melodies) and I actually got it as my birthday present. The first album I bought was Pearl JamBinaural. (note: at that time I only had my pocket money so I had to constantly bother my father to buy me records, but I'll remember this one as the fist album I bought with my own money).

At the end of primary school (age 14 to say) I also started listening to more heavy tunes of which I remember Staind and also Linkin Park as they were popular at the time. I still play Staind from time to time, what can't be really said for Linkin Park which I haven't played for quite some time (except for some mp3 songs that randomly shuffled by the library). At the time I also got to know Metallica and Slayer for the first time – I was like wow this really kicks ass and actually abused it for some time which I find out is not a good thing to do. Anyway, after Metallica I got into metal and hard rock for some time (like let's say 2 years), went trough the typical bands and some almost unknown local bands and getting bored of the same tune all the time I actually started to hate it to the end of secondary school (yeah I'm the kind of person that likes variety and there just was to much metal for one hand but the second one didn't like it so I needed a switch).

The switch became with discovering the psychedelic rock and obviously with Pink Floyd (to be precise with The Final Cut which my father put on one day and I really liked it). After that I started getting more and more interested in psychedelic and alternative rock since they brought me musical elements that were unique from band to band and it was always a pleasure to listen to them. Bands like King Crimson (still one of my favorites), The Velvet Underground, Deep Purple, Argent, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and to mention here also the rock/metal kind of fusion Opeth.

Apart from the so called »currently listened genre« there are also artists I'd like to mention in a separate section as they have a special meaning to me. I'd like to call them also music for my soul since they help me to relax and realy enjoy the melody the offer. Some of them are Katalena (Slovenian folk music merged in a modern tune), Richard Galliano (the passion of South America performed by an awesome accordion master), Buena Vista Social Club (you just have to love the guys for their positive spirit), Tribalistas, Jinx, also Jamiroquai, The Skatalites, Carla Bruni (Quelqu'un m'a dit), Steel Pulse etc..

And here we come to the part that in that in a way clashes with the whole story. Switching to electronic. Why will you ask? Well after 20k play in 2 years (yeah I actually really listened to all those tracks – not just played) you have no alternative but to try something else. At least me.

Ok, I'll admit –it's not just because of that, but I also got fascinated by psychedelic culture as a whole since I find it's ideals a good thing to point to. The discovery of your inner self combined with music that can take you on a spiritual journey.

To mention here is on special band – Shpongle – a Raja Ram and Simon Postford project including 3 cds (hopefully more) of psychedelic/ambient trance music that you just have no choice but to love.

I hope I explained it well nice and short (for more bands you can always check my library). As you can see there is a big variety of genres in it. Don't just think now this guy has no taste – it ain't true. I always try to pick what is best from one genre and strive to the quality - not popularity.

What will come in the next years? Well I got no idea – it depends a lot from my own mood and personality changes (I noticed my personality changed a lot and so did the music I listen to).

    Enjoy the music.
  • [24] Joan Baez – Joan Baez (1960)

    11 Aug 2008, 21:20 by Llorenza

    Joan BaezJoan Baez

    Ethereal.

That’s how you could describe this album in one word. Joan Baez has a very particular way of singing. Not only does she use the resonating voice trick, she is also fond of extremely high notes. (The word extremely is not an exaggeration)

The first time I listened to this album, I got the rietepetiet from it. The same was true for the second and third time. Sometimes I could hear she had a very beautiful voice, but then she threw in some resonation/high notes, and the moment was lost.

The fourth time I suddenly liked it. Is there actually that much resonation? No! Are those notes that high? Yes! (But that doesn’t really matter).
Suddenly I loved her high fragile voice and she became more than ‘a girl with a guitar’. Of course we are spoiled now with girls with guitars. That makes it harder to appreciate Joan Baez. There isn’t the sensation of originality which she surely was in her time. A great inspiration (and more…) for Bob Dylan. (Seriously, is there anyone Bob Dylan doesn’t have a connection with?)
But if you realize that she was one of the first to sing these songs in this way, it is actually quite extraordinary. And yes, she has a very beautiful voice. (Even though untrained ears like mine sometimes need some getting used to it). Maybe the album is a bit too long, but there are some real gems to be found.

    Wonderful music.

(Héél mooi: PlaySilver Dagger, PlayHouse of the Rising Sun, PlayWildwood Flower, PlayDonna Donna)

PS: Yay, I reached the sixties!

'do očí/uší bijící').

    The Prostitutes

    The Cribs

Ano i ne.

A to ani "I'm so glad I've found this" (PlayMunich) nezabralo.

    Joan Baez

    Audio Bullys
Víceméně i bubeník tam mlátil do spíš symbolických škopků ten strohej (a úžasnej) rytmus, kterej by si mohli nechat patentovat..
A čim to?

    The Streets
To teda ani zdaleka ne. No nic, nevermind.
Takže "pokleknout a obejmout neznámýho člověka vedle sebe". Navíc Mike vypadal nějak moc střízlivej (asi měl v šatně taky Bažanta), takže měl pod kontrolou čas a chtěl stihnout všechno, protože dostal přidělenou jen hoďku. Přesto paradoxně hrály spíš samý pomalý, takže už ani nevim jestli sem zaslech moje oblíbený "don't judge me, don't judge me".

    Pendulum

    ================================

+ dostatek cizích kapel (a zároveň nejsou vyčpělé)
+ útulné prostředí, kdy se funkčně využil prostor letiště
+ jen jedna kontrola, což přiznalo chabost argumentu jiných fesťáků zákazu vstupu prakticky s čímkoliv (o prachy jde až v první řadě)
    + ceny
    + pořádek
    + dodržování lineupu
+ hodinové pauzy mezi kapelama => koncerty dobře nazvučené a nepůsobí to hekticky

    - absence pánských záchodů (tzv. 'raketky')
