Is it any wonder that I feel afraid
Is it any wonder that I feel betrayed

    48. PlayGone Gone Gone (Done Moved On) (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss)
    Some sunny day-hay baby

    You weren't there

    You let me fall

    46. PlayJaded (Aerosmith)

    Love and hated
    Wouldn't trade it
    Love me jaded

    45. PlayBe My Yoko Ono (Barenaked Ladies)
If there's someone you can live without, then do so.
And if there's someone you can just shove out; do so.

    I don't have any reasons
    I've left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind

    43. PlayThe Anchor Song (Björk)
    I live by the ocean
    And during the night
    I dive into it
    Down to the bottom
    Underneath all currents
    And drop my anchor
    This is where I'm staying
    This is my home

    42. PlayAddicted to Love (Robert Palmer)
Whoa, you like to think that you’re immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough,
You know you’re gonna have to face it, you’re addicted to love

    41. PlayAan de kust (Bløf)
Hier aan de kust, de Zeeuwse kust.
Waar de liefde van de lust
Steeds maar weer zal gaan verliezen.
    Omdat ze nooit kan kiezen
Tussen goed en niet zo kwaad.
Maar dat is zoals het gaat.
    Hier aan de kust

    40. Te Lo Voy A Devolver (LA 33)

Sound of kuduro knockin' at your door!

    38. PlayUsed to Be a Sweet Boy (Morrissey)
Used to be a sweet boy
    And I'm not to blame

    Something went wrong
    And I know
    I'm not to blame
    Something went wrong
    Can't be to blame

    37. PlayAre You Still Having Fun? (Eagle-Eye Cherry)
    You are on your own
    You do as you please
    Having so much fun
    Gone and lost your reason
After all is said and done
    Are you still having fun?
How were you to know when you've gone astray?
That happiness would go like a lost emotion
You have always gone your way
    Are you happy today?

    36. Learning to Fly (Pink Floyd)
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit

    35. arcoiris de sangre (Los Royal Waffles)
    Instrumental.

    34. PlayBefore He Cheats (Carrie Underwood)
That I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive,
carved my name into his leather seats...
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights,
slashed a hole in all 4 tires...

Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats.

    33. L.E.S. Artistes (Santogold)
    What am I here for
I left my home to disappear is all
    I'm here for myself
    Not to know you
I don't need no one else
Fit in so good the hope is that you cannot see me later
    You don't know me
I am an introvert an excavator
    I'm duckin' out for now
    a face in dodgy elevators
    Creep up and suddenly
    I found myself
    an innovator

    32. PlayBeat It (Michael Jackson)
They told him don't you ever come around here
Don't wanna see your face, you better disappear
The fire's in their eyes and their words are really clear
So beat it, just beat it

    31. PlayLuck of Lucien (A Tribe Called Quest)
Lucien is blue, even though he's really brown.
I had to make the sound, his life is too profound.
On the up-and-up, he's somethin' like a little pup,
Young and naive, it's hard to believe.
As long as you're strong, you can quest with the questers,
Jolly like a jumping bean or a jester.
    Lucien, Lucien, Lucien, Lucien.
    You should know!

    30. PlayOna (Yulduz Usmanova)
    Uzbek. Translation according to http://www.imzadi.nl/Yulduz/Html/SongsO.html

My son, you are always far away from me and don't know I am ill. I always think of you and pray for you. And I do want you to remember me and come and visit me. I feel death is near but I want to die in your hands. Do not forget that you are my only one.

    29. PlayGobbledigook (Sigur Rós)
Þú augu fjúka í sand tárast
Þú tyggigúm í hendir hár fast
    Óhræsisstrákur

    28. PlayHe Got Game (Public Enemy)
    It might feel good
It might sound a little somethin
but damn the game if it don't mean nuttin
What is game? Who is game?
Where's the game in life behind the game behind the game
I got game, she's got game
We got game, they got game, he got game
    It might feel good
It might sound a little somethin
but fuck the game if it ain't sayin nuttin

    27. Roc Boys (And The Winner Is...) (Jay-Z)
Pick a time, lets pick apart some stores
Pick a weekend for freaking for figure fours
I figure frauds never hit a lick before
So they don't know the feeling when them things get across

    26. I'm Shipping Up to Boston (Dropkick Murphys)
    I'm a sailor peg
    And I've lost my leg
    Climbing up the top sails
    I lost my leg!

    25. PlayLast Request (Paolo Nutini)
Oh, I've found, that I'm bound
To wander down that one way road.
And I realise all about your lies
But I'm no wiser than the fool I was before.

    24. PlayOxalá (Madredeus)
Oxalá me passe a dor de cabeça, oxalá.
Oxalá o passo não me esmoreça.
    Oxalá o Carnaval aconteça, oxalá.
Oxalá o povo nunca se esqueça.
Oxalá eu não ande sem cuidado.
Oxalá eu não passe um mau bocado.
Oxalá eu não faça tudo à pressa.
    Oxalá meu Futuro aconteça.
Oxalá que a vida me corra bem, oxalá.
Oxalá, que a tua vida também.

    23. PlayWe Don't Care (Kanye West)
We wasn't supposed to make it past 25 but the jokes on you we still alive
Throw your hands up in the sky and say we don't care what people say

    22. PlayEl Toro Guapo (El Fary)

    21. PlayHeads Will Roll (Marion Raven)
When I think of you, I think of this
And then it turns to bitterness
I'm praying for amnesia, I beg for anesthesia

Forget the lies, and numb the pain
If this don't stop I'll go insane
The more I hurt, the more I'll curse your name

    20. PlayScar (Missy Higgins)
And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could've gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?

    19. PlayI'm Coming Out (Diana Ross)
There's a new me coming out
And I just had to live
    And I wanna give
    I'm completely positive
    I think this time around
    I am gonna do it
    Like you never do it
    Like you never knew it
    Ooh, I'll make it through

The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
    I have to shout
    That I'm coming out

    18. PlayAmerica (Simon & Garfunkel)
"Kathy, I’m lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They’ve all gone to look for America

    17. PlayThe Pretender (Foo Fighters)
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
    You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

    16. PlayI'm Alright (You Gotta Go There to Come Back) (Stereophonics)
I'll tell another lie for you
Tell you what you wanna hear, but that don't make it true
I'll wear another smile for you
That way you know I'm fine, and having fun with you

    15. Sixteen Military Wives (The Decemberists)
    Eighteen academy chairs
Out of which only seven really even care
Doling out a garment to five
Celebrity mimes, they're humbly taken by surprise

    14. PlayNot Ready To Make Nice (Dixie Chicks)
    Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
    They say time heals everything
    But I’m still waiting

    I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
    I’ve paid a price
    And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
    I probably wouldn’t if I could
    ‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

    13. PlayThe Humpty Dumpty Love Song (Travis)
    oh was a perfect day
    oh in a perfect way
    you know something had go
    you left me high
    you left me low

    12. PlayRomeo and Juliet (Dire Straits)
I can't do the talk, like the talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything, but I'd do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, and the bad company
And all I do is kiss you, through the bars of a Rhyme
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time

Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry
I said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die"
There's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize, it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

A lovestruck Romeo, he sings the streets of serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Find a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
He says something like, "You and me, babe, how about it?

    11. PlayThe Show Must Go On (Queen)
    The Show must go on!
    The Show must go on!
    Inside my heart is breaking,
    My make-up may be flaking,
But my smile, still, stays on!

Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance.
Another heartache - another failed romance.
    On and on!
Does anybody know what we are living for?

    10. PlayKeep Breathing (Ingrid Michaelson)
The storm is coming but I don't mind
People are dying, I close my blinds

All that I know is I'm breathing now

I want to change the world
    Instead I sleep
I want to believe in more than you and me

But all that I know is I'm breathing
All I can do is keep breathing
All we can do is keep breathing now

    9. PlayGod Bless the Child (Billie Holiday)
    Yes, the strong gets more
    While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
    That's got his own

    8. Paper Planes (M.I.A.)
I fly like paper, get high like planes
If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name
If you come around here, I make 'em all day
I get one down in a second if you wait

    7. PlayThis Is England (The Clash)
    Black shadow of the Vincent
    Falls on a Triumph line
    I got my motorcycle jacket
But I'm walking all the time
    South Atlantic wind blows
    Ice from a dying creed
    I see no glory
    When will we be free

    6. PlayTropicalia (Beck)
You wouldn't know what to say to yourself
Love is a poverty you couldn't sell
    Misery waits in vague hotels
    To be a victim

    5. Going On (Gnarls Barkley)
I’ve seen it with my own eyes
    How we’re gettin’ otherwise
    Without the luxury of leavin’
The touch and feeling of free is
    Untangible technically
Something you’ve got to believe in
    Connect the cause and effect
One foot in front of the next
This is the start of a journey.
And my mind is already gone
And though there are other unknowns
    Somehow this doesn’t concern me.

    4. PlayAll These Things That I've Done (The Killers)
I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

    3. PlayShape of My Heart (Sting)
And if I told you that I loved you
You'd maybe think there's something wrong
I'm not a man of too many faces
The mask I wear is one
    Those who speak know nothing
And find out to their cost
Like those who curse their luck in too many places
And those who fear are lost

    2. The Rain Song (Led Zeppelin)
I've felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go. I cursed the gloom that set upon us...
But I know that I love you so

    TRACK # 20000
PlaySomething To Do With My Hands (Her Space Holiday)

You know it kills me to see such a pretty girl so tired
You've got your mother's cheekbones and your father's crooked smile
Forget all those places that you've never really been
And all those situations you somehow found yourself in
Let your body sink into me
    Like your favorite memory
    Like a line of poetry
Or a fucking fit of honesty
I'll do my best to keep you, keep you sleepy as the south
With my old watch on your wrist
And my thumbs inside your mouth
Suck on my fingertips until you kill all my prints
So your boyfriend has no clue
Of how much I've been touching you

My problem with me is my problem with you
    It doesn't take much
    For me to come unglued
    I put my headphones on
    And hear your favorite songs
And it kills me to know
That this won't be one of them

You know it saves me to think even for a little while
I owned the set of shoulders that you came to rely on
Like in that movie theater when you whispered in my ear
    I almost didn't make it
This has been my hardest year
Your job is killing you faster than a cancer could
So now you're giving up like they always said you would
You've got that old map out now and you found the farthest town
You hope that if you're lucky this is where you'll settle down

    I don't care where you move I don't care if it's far
All that I ask is that I know where you are
In case our timing is right
In case you need more from me
    Than a bit of advice
Or a tongue full of sympathy
  • 2008: najważniejsze koncerty

    7 Jan 2009, 17:20 by halicarnassus

    16. The Prodigy

Kluczowy kawałek: „Out Of Space”. Na przekór frocie, hehe. Bo ja też bardzo doznawałem przy „Smack My Bitch Up”, ale to właśnie wspólne odśpiewanie przez tłum „Out Of Space” było najmocniejszym punktem koncertu.

    15. Jay-Z
5 lipca, Heineken Open’er Festival, Gdynia

Samotność w tłumie? Gdzie tam, nie na Open’erze. Wielka dawka pozytywnej energii, profesjonalizm i muzyczna miazga. Świetny zespół i świetny sam Hova, wsparci zaskakująco dobrymi wizualkami.

Kluczowy kawałek: „Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)...”.

    27 lipca, Globaltica, Gdynia

Kluczowy kawałek: „Свобода”. No pewnie, że znowu za grupowe śpiewanie. Dzięki Bogu obok jakieś chłopy darły się bardziej niż ja.

    13. Nouvelle Vague
13 lipca, Ladies’ Jazz Festival, Gdynia

Dobra, to co my mamy płytowo? Raczej umiarkowanie ciekawe, plumkające covery nowej fali w stylu bossa nova (bossa nova = nowa fala, zgrywusy). Co mamy na żywo? Istny rozpieprz. Dynamika, seks, taniec, moc. Muzyczny skok w górę, ale to przede wszystkim charyzma zamienia koncert NV w takie widowisko. Widzieć cały Teatr Muzyczny krzyczący „fuck!”, widzieć baunsujące starsze panie w żakiecikach... niezapomniane.

Kluczowy kawałek: „Too Drunk To Fuck”. Przełam się i ryknij fuck. Tak, jesteś w Teatrze Muzycznym. Są fotele, ładne wdzianka, profesorowie z Twojej dawnej uczelni... Fuck!!!!!

    12. The Futureheads
    17 listopada, Proxima, Warszawa

Kluczowy kawałek: „The Beginning Of The Twist”. Bez jakiegoś szczególnego powodu – po prostu moja ulubiona piosenka na ostatnim albumie i szalałem ile wlezie.

    11. Erykah Badu

Przylazłem z Pistolsów i stanąłem sam z tyłu wielkiego tłumu, by w trakcie koncertu zbliżać się coraz bardziej do sceny, coraz bardziej poruszony.

Moc.

    10. Hercules and Love Affair
    16 listopada, Palladium, Warszawa

No i świetnie wyszedł z „Classique # 2” i świetnie przeszedł w „I’m Telling You”.

    9. The Chemical Brothers

    8. The Raconteurs
4 lipca, Heineken Open’er Festival, Gdynia

Soczysty rockowy koncert.

Kluczowy kawałek: „Steady As She Goes” – za to wejście refrenu, kiedy tłum ruszył do góry. I skakałem.

    7. Tricky
    22 listopada, Palladium, Warszawa

Koncert Tricky’ego, czyli rockowa apokalipsa. Emocje z gatunku tych wielkich i skrajnych. Wielkie wow.

Nawet kawałki z ostatniej płyty (którą też oceniam łagodniej niż ogół) się broniły, choć oczywiście to starsze utwory czyniły największe spustoszenie. New York Cares. About Gdynia.

    5. Franz Ferdinand
    19 listopada, Stodoła, Warszawa

Energetyczna bomba. Cała Stodoła skacząca w rytm „Do You Want To” czy „Take Me Out”.

I Warszawa stanęła w ogniu.

    4. Sonar Kollektiv Orchester

A niby taki stary jestem.

    2. Klaus Schulze & Lisa Gerrard

    1. Kraftwerk
    21 września, Sacrum Profanum, Kraków

I wreszcie numer jeden. Taki bonus do mocy, którą dostałem w postaci tylu ulubionych i legendarnych często utworów.

Kluczowy kawałek: „Radioaktivität”. Karuzela wielkich emocji. Olbrzymia potęga brzmienia, drżnienie hali i podłoża, łzy w połowie utworu, a potem szalony taniec. Pewnie będę to pamiętać przez długie lata. Dziękuję.

    27. Sufjan Stevens – Come On Feel The Illinoise
    26. Boards of Canada – Geogaddi
    25. Aphex Twin – I Care Because You Do
I Care Because You Do is one of those rare great, groundbreaking electronic albums which stands pretty much unimitated. Perhaps it is because it was released before digital production suddenly became widespread and drill & bass became the new thing. Perhaps it is just that no one else could inject the same sort of playfulness needed to make music like this really work. Whatever the reason, it’s genius.

    24. Autechre – Chiastic Slide
Clanks and whirrs and mechanical noises all combine to make an album which soundtracks a post-apocalyptic world ruled by machines where beauty shines through in glimpses.

    23. Arovane – Lilies
‘Lilies’ is the perfect title for this album and the emotions which it communicates. Melodies float over shimmering beats, beautiful, organic, fragile, and ultimately finite.

    22. Explosions in the Sky – The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
This is an album which swoops and soars. The album is a journey through emotions and the listener is compelled to follow.

    21. M83 – Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
Post-rock with synths. A truly epic record, full of energy.

    20. Wu-Tang Clan – Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Enter The Wu-Tang sounds quite unlike any other album I’ve heard. Whilst the rapping is top class, what makes this album so brilliant is the production, which is rugged and raw and brilliantly original. It wasn’t until Prefuse 73’s debut, 8 years on, that someone came along and finally took up where Enter The Wu-Tang left off and took hip-hop to the next level.

    19. Bola – Soup
Soup is a truly stunning work of ambient techno. It is beautiful, nostalgic, and lush.

    18. Squarepusher – Ultravisitor
Ultravisitor is a sprawling masterpiece. Jenkinson draws upon all his work prior to this and the result is an album which astounds and intrigues. At times it is challenging, at others brutal, and at times beautiful. It sounds like a ‘best-of’, just with completely new material.

    17. Envy – Insomniac Doze
This is post-rock meets screamo – despair, anguish, and anger permeate through the walls of noise that Envy create.

    16. Venetian Snares – Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett
Breakcore meets classical. The result is magnificent - never does this unlikely union sound at all forced.

    15. Radiohead – The Bends
Ok Computer and the albums which followed it take different genres and seamlessly meld them together – they don’t really come under the classification of rock or pop. Comparing Kid A to a Coldplay album is like comparing Aphex Twin to Sufjan Stevens. The Bends, though, is simply a truly unbelievable rock album. Radiohead didin’t here deviate wildly from their contemporary rock bands. They just plain did it better.

    14. Burial – Untrue
Untrue is haunting. Here Burial does for dubstep what Boards Of Canada did for what can loosely be termed IDM – he injects it with pure emotion and creates a record which is devastatingly dark and personal.

    13. Squarepusher – Feed Me Weird Things
Occasionally someone comes along who tears up how you think about music. Squarepusher is one of those artists. Feed Me Weird Things is that album. Squarepusher Theme is that song. Hyperactive jazz bass guitar over hyperspeed breaks, over which Tom Jenkinson somehow remains in control. The rest of the album pushes drum & bass past its logical limits, bringing jazz along for the ride. The result is mind-blowing.

    12. Radiohead – In Rainbows
It’s been out well over a year now, and I still get excited each time I hear the start of 15 Step.

    11. Global Communication – 76:14
A lot of mid-90s ambient techno sounds quite dated these days – that isn’t necessarily a bad thing – but 76:14 sounds like it was produced yesterday, or perhaps even next year. It is incredibly lush, melodies floating around over spacey beats. If angels made music, it would probably sound like this.

    10. Sigur Rós – Agaetis Byrjun
Not a lot to say here. Beautiful and ethereal.

    9. 65daysofstatic – The Fall Of Math
At their best, 65daysofstatic take the intensity of Aphex and Squarepusher and mix it with the emotional force of Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai. What results here is an album which never lets up. It is dark yet ultimately euphoric.

    8. Sigur Rós – ( )
Clichés abound when talking about Sigur Ros, and rightfully so. This is the soundtrack to an icy landscape twinkling under the light of the stars.

    7. Radiohead – Kid A
So much has been written about Kid A – about its originality, how derivative it is, about how it pushed the boundaries, about how it was too experimental, not experimental enough, pretentious, innovative, and so on. What matters is that it is a brilliant synergy of electronic complexities and rock sensibilities, and that it is devastatingly beautiful from start to finish.

    6. Autechre – Amber
At once cold, metallic and austere, warm, organic and lush, Amber is an album which challenges and soothes. Each track slowly evolves as layers of beats and melodies rise and fall, each sound meticulously placed, yet at the same time it sounds like music made by nature, melodies intertwining as if they were meant to be that way. Amber is man and machine in perfect harmony.

    5. Squarepusher – Go Plastic
Some music works by being simple, some by being complex. With simple music, the skill is in preventing it becoming mundane. With complex music, the skill is in pushing the complexity to the absolute limits without losing control of what’s going on. On Go Plastic, Squarepusher pushed the limits further than anyone else without losing control. This is calculated violence with sound – a series of sonic assaults which dance on the edge of the abyss without ever falling into complete madness.

    4. Boards of Canada – Music Has The Right To Children
This album is all about childhood. It is the embodiment of nostalgia for that innocent time in our lives when we grew up blissfully ignorant of the suffering in the world around us. At the same time, dark undercurrents drift below the surface of the music, bringing us back from that nostalgia to the real world.

    3. Biosphere – Substrata
Biosphere paints pictures with sound. He constructs soundscapes which engulf the listener, drawing them in until they are part of the music. Substrata isn’t just an aural experience, it’s a whole atmosphere. It hypnotically demands your whole attention. It is sublimely beautiful organic ambient music which tells a story of the most beautiful isolation – isolation where you are not lonely; rather, isolation where you are at one with the world around you.

    2. Sigur Rós – Takk…
Sigur Ros epitomise what great music should do - Jonsi sings in a language I don't understand, but the sheer power of the music communicates emotions too pure for words. Takk is by a long way the most beautiful album I have ever come across.

    1. Radiohead – Ok Computer
It’s hard to say what makes Ok Computer so utterly perfect. It just works. It’s dark, uplifting, complex, simple, sparse, and dense. It’s a journey which draws you in, music which defies categorisation, drawing from so many different sources yet completely original in its execution. It is perfect.

Finally, as alluded to above, I’m always discovering new music so a favourite albums list is never going to really be complete. Here are a few which probably deserve to be on the list but I just haven’t had for long enough to decide where they belong.

    Murcof – Martes
    Paavoharju – Yha Hamaraa
    Nas – Untitled
    Bola – Fyuti

Any comments are welcome and I would love some recommendations.

  • My Musical Journey

    3 Jan 2009, 20:14 by neesh

These albums have shaped me into the wide-ranged aficionado I am today. I grew up in a household with my ma who came to the US from the Caribbean as a young woman in the late 60's (she's a fan of Elvis Presley and the Golden Oldies as well as Hindi/Bollywood tunes in addition to Trinidadian music, Norah Jones and appreciates anyone who's "got pipes on 'em") and two much older siblings. My brother was a house/club DJ so that shit was bumping constantly and is embedded in my brain. My sister was into R&B like Tevin Campbell, Jodeci and whatnot yet also smooth jazz. I was all about solo chick singers, Disney tunes, Show Tunes, Carnival music, salsa, merengue and dance hits from all eras (especially disco and club remixes of pop hits) until the fifth grade when I got my hands on Tragic Kingdom and Razorblade Suitcase. Thus began my foray into , interrupted only for a brief moment when I became Bad Boy records obsessed as a tween. I first heard Play...Baby One More Time on Z-100 in the limo my sister rented to take my friends and I to the city to celebrate my advancement to teenage-dom. I had heard all about the seventeen year old sensation, but hadn't heard the hit until that moment. I was an instant fan. That eased my Backstreet Boys, N Sync obsession. My long-ass-term ex-boyfriend from middle school until college introduced me to the magic of the archetypes of rock. My closest childhood friend reintroduced me to music. My best dude buddy exposed me to punk, ska and Nyack in my mid-teens. The ex's cousin introduced me to pop punk and The Chance. From there I've veered off into the realms of , , , , , , , , , , and . I'm currently trying to expand my funk horizons. I will always have a place in my heart for , and
