A star-studded collaboration. In his first single as the main credited artist since 2015, Jay Rock links up with Future, James Blake and Black Hippy partner and label mate, Kendrick Lamar. According to TDE, the song is slated to be the first single from Jay Rock’s follow up effort to his 2015 project 90059.
The single is also set to appear on the upcoming official soundtrack for Marvel’s Black Panther. This is the third song Kendrick has contributed to for the film, alongside “Cops on the Radar” with Vince Staples and “All The Stars” with label-mate SZA.
On the track, there are references to the events of the film and the comic. The title especially refers to the death of King T'Chaka of Wakanda in the previous Captain America: Civil War movie. Within this transfer of power, Black Panther’s kingship is challenged by the main antagonist, Killmonger, to whom Kendrick directly makes references; and K-Dot even raps from his perspective.
