“Moonlight” is inspired by the 2016 Oscar-winning film of the same name. At the 89th Academy Awards the musical La La Land was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture; after a few minutes the error was corrected and Moonlight was declared the winner. It became the first film with an all-black cast and the first LGBT-themed film to win Best Picture. Jay’s “Moonlight” functions as a critique of how the rap game has become stale, repetitive and fake. Producer No I.D. samples “Fu-Gee-La” by Fugees. Nas and DJ Khaled recently sampled the iconic Lauryn Hill song on “Nas Album Done.”
