Beam was raised outside Columbia, South Carolina, where his father worked in land management and his mother was a schoolteacher. He graduated from the Florida State University Film School with an MFA degree. Until the first Iron & Wine album, Beam’s main source of income was as a professor of film and cinematography at the University of Miami and Miami International University of Art & Design. He had been writing songs for over seven years before a friend lent him a four-track recorder. His friends handed out copies of demos that he had made, and the owner of Sub Pop Records personally contacted Beam and proposed a deal.
Beam released his first album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, on the Sub Pop label in 2002; Beam wrote, performed, recorded, and produced every track on the album by himself at a studio in his home. The album features acoustic guitars, banjo, and slide guitar; its music has been compared, variously, to that of Nick Drake, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Elliott Smith, and Ralph Stanley.

For some reason live i hate all the songs he plays from the shepards dog, but he plays all (in my opinion) weaker tracks. Peace beneath the city should not have a little "jam session" when he could have played resurection fern and flightless bird american moth in that time. I loved the first time i saw him with just him and his guitar.and skipping jezebel for woman king? He needs to pay attention to the crowd's reactions.

saw them at Pukkelpop festival in Belgium last weekend. Even though they didn't exactly played to music I learned to love the past few years, the show was spectaculair. Sam is a musical genius, everything he does sounds so pure and great. Loved to see them from so closeby, can't wait to see them again....

I love the full band, i think they are incredible. I'm happy he is no longer just solo, i think progression is the way to go. I'm really excited to see him at Terminal 5 in NYC in a few months, even thu that is a horrible venue for him... By the way, if you all have a chance check out my music, i'm influenced by Folk, Jazz and Electronic music, its something a big different.. http://www.last.fm/music/Dave+Shichman :)

Horrible show in Gothenburg. The musicians seamed to have fun though.

I never gonna see him live as long as he plays his song this way, with a 20-piece band

Nexwell, I agree. I saw him for the first time at Lollapalooza and I was a bit disappointed at how "jammy" it was. It just wasn't what I was expecting. Otherwise, I love Mr. Beam's music. Though, I'm debating whether to see one of his shows in November.

Why can't it just be Sam and his guitar like it used to be

I don't like the new arrangements on the songs either, they completely ruined "Boy With a Coin"

Their performance at the Øya Festival was sooooo dissapointing. Just too many musicians on the stage playing for themselves and not for the audience. Thereby destroying the atmosphere of the songs. Half of the audience left before they finished. Don't see them on their new tour if you want to continue loving them.
