Way Out West - 7th August '08
9 Aug 2008, 11:26 by lostshadow
After reading the reviews of Way Out West in the local newspaper in Göteborg, I decided that I needed to write some reviews myself, since obviously the reviewers must have been at some other festival. They all seem to have seen different bands at different locations, of course rendering their opinions very different from mine.
I spent the first evening of Way Out West at Jazzhuset, where Silje Nes, Ingrid Olava and Wildbirds & Peacedrums would embellish my night. I had never before heart neither Silje nor Ingrid, but I am a long time fan of Wildbirds & Peacedrums.
Silje Nes – **
Silje Nes was, sadly, quite uninteresting. She played quite beautiful songs, but without any tension or real dynamic. It all sounded a bit like a school concert for parents, though a good one. This discovery surprised me since I had the impression that Silje was the most famous of the bands that played at Jazzhuset this night.
Ingrid Olava - ****
If Silje Nes was uninteresting, Ingrid Olava and her band took me with surprise, and totally swept me off my feet. If she would have played alone this night, she might have sounded like any female singer-songwriter with a piano, and at times she reminded me of Tori Amos or a raspier Kate Bush. She is also a skilled songwriter and after listening to some of her songs here at last.fm like Only just begun, I have fallen in love with her voice. But what really made this evening special was her band. Accompanied by drums and guitar/bass, suddenly the songs get the same kind of build-ups as Sigur Rós, yielding a delicate combination of piano-based singer songwriter and postrock. Towards the end of the concert she played covers of Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, which only further confirmed this mix of traditions. This is where you should have been this night, and she would probably have been given five stars if it wasn't for...
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - *****
According to Ingrid Olava, Wildbirds & Peacedrums is her favorite swedish band, and that's no surprise to me, since I also have loved them since I discovered them a year and a half ago. For any other band it would have been impossible to go out after Ingrid and make a better concert with more energy, I also doubted myself, but for Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin this seemed to be no problem. Wildbirds & Peacedrums is the perfect mix of blues, pop, punk, minimalist postrock (if there is such a thing) and with a voice that is not of this world. Mariam might not sing perfectly clean, but her energy and presence will surely blow you away. If you weren't there last night, immediately run down to the record store and get The Snake, their second album that is a bit closer to the live experience. Sadly all the energy and communication cannot be caught on record, so the songs on the disc can't really be compared to seeing them live. Afterwards, Andreas and Mariam seemed just as exhausted as me, after a fantastic night. -

146: Extensive taste I guess...
30 Apr 2007, 13:28 by furilec
Bored.
1. List your top 20 overall artists
2. For each, list the 8 most similar artists
3. Delete any repeated artists to get an idea of how eclectic your music listening habits are
Use this script thingie if you're lazy.
A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a score of 160 represents an extremely varied one.
