The song was was co-written by Iva Davies of Icehouse and John Oates of the U.S. band Hall & Oates. The single reached #1 on the Australian singles chart on 16 November 1987, #7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles, and #10 on the Canadian Singles Chart.

Australian new wave band Icehouse was formed in 1977, initially called 'Flowers', by Iva Davies (born Ivor Arthur Davies, on 22 May 1955, in Wauchope, New South Wales, Australia). Inspired by art rock and avant-gardepop, Davies was the main creative force behind the band, being a classically trained musician. Band member Keith Welsh joined him on bass.
