There is more than one artist with this name.

1. A British indie/twee pop group formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1996.
2. A French speed metal band formed in 1994.

1. Heavenly was a 1990s band, originally forming in Oxford, England in 1989. amelia fletcher (vocals), Mathew Fletcher (drums; Amelia’s brother), Peter Momtchiloff (guitar) and Robert Pursey (bass) had all been members of Talulah Gosh, a key member of the scene which preceded the twee movement, formed in 1986.

Heavenly debuted with the 7” single I Fell in Love Last Night, followed by another 7”, Our Love Is Heavenly, both released in 1990 on Sarah Records. Heavenly Vs. Satan, the group’s debut album, came out in 1991. At this stage in their career, Heavenly’s songs were still mainly concerned with an innocent view of love, whether or not requited, and the instrumentation remained very much the same jangly guitar style used by Talulah Gosh.

Before releasing the critically acclaimed Le Jardin de Heavenly, Cathy Rogers (keyboard, back-up vocals) joined the band. Her harmony vocals and keyboards became an integral part of the group’s sound. Another strikingly different element of the group’s second album was the inclusion of the track, PlayC Is the Heavenly Option, featuring the guest vocals of K Records founder Calvin Johnson, who released Heavenly’s records in the USA. The song even featured amelia fletcher rapping, after a fashion. Calvin Johnson would go on to provide additional guest vocals on each of the Heavenly albums following [album artist=Heavenly]Le Jardin De Heavenly.

v_for_violence - Yes, Heavenly are one of the greatest indiepop bands ever! You should also check out Talulah Gosh if you haven't already. Most of Heavenly were in TG. Brilliant, brilliant bands. They just don't make records as joyous and life-affirming as Our Love Is Heavenly any more.

CoB covered Britney. O_O I'll have to take a peek for that, they did ok with Rebel Yell. Word up, I know that song, not heard of Gun. :S I have Fame by Adagio which is badass. ^^ I have Firewind covering Maniac, it's awesome. Plenty of good suggestions. Probably gonna take some time to track these down though. :) Thanks.

Talking about metal covers, here are a few ones I can think of right now that are worse checking in my opinion: PlayFame by Adagio, then Losing My Religion by Karelia (I actually love this one) and any covers by Carnival in Coal like PlayManiac for example and a couple other ones.

Charonicus: You should check out Children of Bodom's cover of Opps I did it Again. Its amazing and as cheesy as metal covers get. Also "Word Up" by Gun is a pretty cheesy cover (although I forgot the lousy band that first made this song).

Yeah I have Rasputin. ^^ That's awesome. I still can't tag tracks without dropping my firewall since the "new" last.fm came into effect so the list is a little outdated. I've seen the video too, pimptastic. ;) I have Surfin' USA but I'm not that big on Blind Guardian. I looked up that Northern Kings album, looks like a nice tracklist. I thought the name sounded familiar and I'm pretty sure I've heard "We Don't Need Another Hero". I'll get it I think. ^^

Oh yeah, it doesn't always work certainly. Turisas does a great cover of Boney M's Rasputin that actually feels appropriate to the man. They did a music video of it that is hilarious! And who can forget Blind Guardian's covers of Surfin' USA, Mr. Sandman, Barbara Ann, Long Tall Sally, and Spread Your Wings?

It's the cheesy covers I love best, which power is well suited for. Like Sigma's version of Abba's S.O.S. >_< I'm not much of a Beatles fan to start with. I tagged most of the metal covers I own here http://www.last.fm/user/Charonicus/library/tags?tag=awesome+metal+covers+of+non+metal+songs&view=cloud which isn't that many! Maybe I'll take a look around for Northern Kings. I think a lot of songs sound pretty good when they're metalled up. Doesn't always work though. Seven Witches' version of The Chain will never beat Fleetwood Mac's original. ¬¬

I apologize for my rudeness. I was not familiar with the songs, so I assumed you were serious. I hope we can start over. I don't want you to think metalheads are all asses. :( As for the discussion of covers, there is a super-group from Finland called Northern Kings that does metal covers of 80s hits as a break from their main bands. They have done covers on everything from Journey and Radiohead to Phil Collins and Kylie Minogue.

Charonicus, there's plenty of metal and punk compilations that do bizarre covers of pop songs, if you're into that sort of thing. I think the weirdest one I've seen is a metal tribute to the Beatles entitled "Butchering the Beatles." I'm sure thousands of snarky record reviewers rejoiced when they caught a glimpse of the title.

Jesus, Hrothdane, lighten up. I never insulted the metal Heavenly, its fans, or the power metal genre, so how exactly am I a troll? If you would have actually listened to the songs in my post before freaking out at me, you would have known how ridiculous the comparison to power pop was. There is no dual guitar shredding in "There She Goes" nor are there falsetto vocals in "I'll Be There For You," so I thought it was pretty obvious that the comment was tongue-in-cheek. But I'm not looking to derail the discussion further, so let's just drop it.

Then you're forgiven. ^^ There's some pretty stupid people on the internet, I wouldn't put it past someone to actually believe something so ridiculous. I'd love to hear a power metal cover of "I'll be there for you" now I think about it. ^^ I love the cheesy covers. :D Vision Divine do an awesome version of Take on Me.

Guys, I was joking. Power metal is actually named after Pantera's seminal 1988 debut of the same name.

If you're objecting to the term "evolution" my bad. A poor choice of word. I wasn't trying to imply thrash or speed are in any way inferior. :S But the direct correlation is clear. The drumstyles/techniques and guitar speeds alone are enough. It could just as easily be argued that many other metal subgenres contributed to it. I seriously doubt you can compare it to the Rembrandts. :S And I like the Rembrandts, not dissing them either. But seriously. Falsetto is not a staple of the genre. There are many power bands with female vocalists or more stereotypical male vocals (Would you seriously suggest Kiuas and the Rembrandts have anything in common?) You need to come up with a better closing argument than "Please kill yourself" Kriss, at least Ruiner tried to justify his statements. Hroth's right about the euro power being happier (Heavenly, Fairyland, Dark Moor?) and about the roots as it were. Tima, compare Destruction to H.I.M. Vastly different approach. :P

@timahall maybe you should listen to more kinds of it, you may be surprised at how diverse the scene is. For example, European power metal (called "flower" metal by many) usually has much "happier" melodies and themes, and aren't as heavy. Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius are great examples.
