There are multiple artists with the name Enigma:

1) Enigma is a musical project started by Michael Cretu (Romanian musician) in 1990. He is both the composer and the producer; different guest singers often provide vocals on Enigma tracks.

After some solo projects, Cretu started to produce the first Enigma record “MCMXC a.D.” in 1990 using the nickname “Curly MC”. Until today, six studio albums and seventh, Seven Lives Many Faces on the way (release on September 19, 2008), with 35 million CDs sold worldwide, 50 number one hits, 90 platinum discs and songs appearing on more than 1,000 compilation albums, ENIGMA is the most successful German music project of all times.

With the 1990 hit “Sadeness Part I,” Enigma brought the new age fascination with Gregorian chants and old-world culture to the world and clubs; the resulting single was both unique and irresistible.
On his second album, 1993’s “Cross of Changes”, some of the old-world elements remained, but the new age angle came to the forefront in a set of slick, radio-friendly pop. The well-known “Return to Innocence” was born.
Enigma 3: Le Roi Est Mort, Vive le Roi followed in 1996 - a musical summary of the previous concepts.
The fourth Enigma record, “The Screen Behind the Mirror”, followed in early 2000, and in 2003 “Voyageur” came out. Three years later, “A Posteriori” (2006) was released. The result is an intergalactic sound trip to the universe and back to earth based on a more electronic/trance sound.

Geez, how can ANYONE not see that this new album has many elements that are found in the first 3 albums. I mean, listen to Touchness - just LISTEN to it and realize that this IS the sound of Enigma. There is just no question that this new album is amazing! No question at all...Enigma doesn't have an album that is bad. My least favourite is Voyageur but that album is still incredible. "Voyageur" is actually one of my favourite tracks from Enigma. SLMF is a gem! I have my special edition currently on hold for me at my local HMV and am excited to pick it up and hear the 4 EXTRA songs. :D

I find Voyageur and Posteriori to be at the bottom of Cretu's works. Seven Lives Many Faces is interesting though. It has a couple of tracks I absolutely love but an equal amount that I hate so much. I really can't stand Cretu's voice in any of his tracks... its good possibly when reverbed with someone elses vocals but I don't think its able to stand on its own. He's still got the magic when it comes to the production aspects though. I also don't know where he's pulling the lyrics from but some of the tracks since Voyageur have been cringe worthy in this regard.

I don't understand the problem a lot of people have with A Posteriori. Give me A Posteriori over Voyageur any day of the week.

I don't understand all the hatin' on SLMF. Voyageur was good, A Posteriori was bad, SLMF is easily the best of the three. It harkens back to early Enigma. More lyrics and abstraction. Honestly, A Posteriori was a bad club album. SLMF has been on constant repeat since I got my imported Limited Edition, but nothing will ever beat the masterpiece that was The Screen Behind The Mirror.

I agree with Addicted2Melody here about the lack of artistic cohesion if SLMF would not be the last Enigma album. The album would definitly make sense if it was the final episode, that much I agree with too!

Well, I wouldn't say the prospect of more Enigma disappoints me, far from it - but if what you say is true, it sort of makes a mockery of the name "Seven Lives Many Faces", and makes you wonder what Cretu was hoping to achieve with this album. Don't get me wrong, I really really like SLMF and I do still slightly prefer it to A Posteriori. But at the same time I would agree 100% with jsdecarie that stylistically it goes back rather than forward, something that would have been more understandable if it was planned as the last ever Enigma record.

Phil, sorry to "dissapoint" you but Cretu lately said that not only SLMF isn't his last album but he already works on his next record and it won't be the last as well. As for the direction of latest record, it's hard to say. I just that he just let it flow and made what he wanted at this particular time, may be with some tension from record company (the album sounds more mainstream as never before). IMHO.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't SLMF planned as Cretu's final album as Enigma? And if that is the case, it is clear that SLMF is meant to sum up the entire Engima discography in a way that doesn't sound too dated. I really don't think this album was intented to be innovative or to "build upon A Posteriori". If it wasn't intended as the last Engima album then I might be a little more confused as to what direction Cretu was taking the project - but if it is the last album the project's direction becomes almost a non-issue.

When Cretu unleashed A Posteriori, I loved it almost instantly. Finally we get to hear his more "dancy" style of composing while still having the Enigma flame going. A Posteriori was paving the way for a NEW, and unique sound and being almost all instrumental was a great move. The novelty of foreign languages having passed like what, oh, 15 years ago, makes a come back in Seven Lives Many Faces, and to me, the whole album feels like a huge step back in innovation. Frankly, who came up with the cheesy lyrics on SLMF? I guess Jens Gad still has influence on Cretu after all... Eeeek.

The new album kicks ass! Michael Cretu never fails to deliver, and never ceases to innovate, reinvent and move forward. He's certainly one of the greatest musical geniuses of our age.

Ok. Seven Lives is truly not the best their cd, and A posteriori not the worst. The most anti-Enigmatic was Voyageur. All of things before Voyageur was just brilliant and all of things after are not bad but not very impersing. After listening "Puerta del cielo" I was expecting more. Some of songs are truly Voyageur level and for me sounds bad (Distorted Love, The Language of Sound, Je T'aime Till My Dying Day...) but some really good, especially The Same Parents and Pt. del cielo.

New album is on par with the first three albums. Very good, indeed, after the dissapointments of A Posterior and Voyageur.
