It peaked at number 5 in the UK and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. In addition, the song reached number-one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. In 2017, "Hold On" was ranked number 4 in Spin magazine's ranking of The 30 Best ’90s R&B Songs.
