Day Dream was written by Billy Strayhorn shortly after joining with Ellington in 1939. When Ellington and his musicians went to Europe, Strayhorn stayed behind and wrote several songs, including Day Dream and Passion Flower. It was recorded in 1940 with Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone.
