"I think it's the most interesting written song on the record and it's basically from this article that I read about a plane crash that happened 40 years ago and it's about a sole survivor and the story just goes into the whole how did she survive on this. It was in the Amazon where the plane crashed and her mother-in-law had died and um… Long story short, she had to find civilization through the Amazon, walking through the waters, where she was found by some loggers and it just really hit me, just like you know… They were asking the question 'How did she survive that?' and I don't know, for some reason it made sense and at that time it really hit me hard. A few days later we started jamming to this riff of 'Whispers & Ashes' and the title of the song before that was 'Swamp' and it just had this feeling of that and it really provoked those lyrics and I literally just started writing to it and it made perfect sense with the music and the story that I had. It was extremely inspiring to me… and 'Whispers & Ashes' came along." ~ Emily Armstrong in 2013
