'The Drowned Girl' is taken from Berthold Brecht's play 'Baal', with the lyrics translated by Dominic Muldowney. In 1981 Bowie recorded five songs from the play as part of a planned EP release that would coincide with the BBC production of the play that same year, starring Bowie as Baal. 'The Drowned Girl' is about the suicide of one of Baal's conquests.
