Christian Death (named as a satirical play on words derived from the designer brand ‘Christian Dior’) was founded in October, 1979 by Rozz Williams (vocals), James McGearty (bass), George Belanger (drums), and a guitarist named Jay brought in from a previous band Rozz had been in called Daucus Karota. The group went on hiatus briefly in 1981, but reformed that summer with Rikk Agnew replacing Jay on guitar. Their debut album - the deathrock classic “Only Theatre Of Pain” - was released in 1982.
By late 1982, Agnew and Belanger had left the band, and were replaced by Eva O and China respectively. Eva O was then replaced by Michael Montana, and by the end of the year, the band split once again.
In 1983, Williams formed a new band with members of Pompeii 99, a band that Christian Death had played some shows with just before they had split. This new group consisted of Rozz, Valor, Gitane DeMone, David Glass & Constance Smith. Rozz wanted to bring back the Daucus Karota name for this new band, but Valor and his European record company convinced him to use the name Christian Death.
This line-up remained more or less constant for a couple of years, although there were some problems during that time that led to stress between the members. The problems came to a head in 1985, when Rozz left the band just before a European tour. The remaining members (Valor, Demone and Glass) made an agreement with Rozz to rename the band Sin And Sacrifice, but subsequently continued to tour and record under the original Christian Death name against Rozz’s wishes.

@ yoursorrow: Duh. Of course we don't want that. The current line-up sucks ass, and it's upsetting to have to see their faces everytime we listen to Rozz's Christian Death. How is that "funny"?

I find it funny how everyone is happy not to have the current wretched lineup of Christian Death's photo in their most listened to.

fucking ace! victory at last! ;D i'm practically giddy with excitement. ANYWAYS, @ Dogmanstar: I have the reissue of Ashes, but not Catastrophe Ballet. I think mine might be from Cleopatra, but I can't be sure. Anyways, my copy of Ashes plays perfectly on my CD player.

Goddamn, what were they thinking! Releasing CD albums is always a mess. Like that new compilation album "Six, six, sixth communion"(?), there isn't any new tracks on that album at all! And (dogmanstar,) I've heard that there's also video recording of Rozz's last gig ever before his death. So why can't they release that? Is it really so hard

Just curious: do you guys have the CD reissues of Ashes and Catastrophe Ballet? I had the Cleopatra releases of these two, but none of them played right in any of my CD players... and the Candlelight releases are sooo flawed (two tracks are shifted in Catastrophe Ballet - The Glass House is before Cervix Couch) and there are several sound hiccups throughout some songs in Ashes... I currently own 3 CD issues of Catastrophe Ballet (LSR, Contempo and Candlelight) and 2 of Ashes (LSR and Candlelight) - the Contempo release (called "A Catastrophe Ballet with Rhapsody of Youth and Rain") has the best sound quality in my opinion, but I still didn't find a real good copy of Ashes in CD format - the LSR release has the best artwork (designed by Rozz himself), but the sound quality is so muffled and low, and the new releases are so messed up (artwork and sound quality-wise)!!

@Assiman: I know for a fact that "The Path of Sorrows" concert in LA (at the Roxy) has been professionally documented on video, but never released, and I think we'll never see it. Well, maybe only John Collins has it (among his PE tapes... ;)). According to Collins, "This performance was entitled The Path of Sorrows. This concert was professionally recorded and was shown on television. As Evening Falls, Ashes, Ashes II, When I was Bed, Cervix Couch, The Blue Hour and The Luxury of Tears are included in the second Heavens and Hells cassette."

who exactly are the people in the current picture (from left to right)? I can't identify everyone.

But now seriously, is there any videos of CD with Rozz feat. valor? There's these live recordings etc, but is there any videos? Because I think Catastrophe ballet's songs are much better in live than the original album.

"I found your soul smashed on these stairs - right or wrong? Lament stands backed in corners... it's all a mistake !!" ;-) This is one of the most romantic songs Rozz has ever written... "You'll fall in love, but still it must be me!"

"How can stolen be sto- Love is a child bringing hope inbetween us" :) Still, live version of Desperate Hell and Working on beyond rules on that album.
