Butcher Birds formed in Brisbane, Australia in late 2005, after Stacey Coleman (vocals/guitar) and Joanna Nilson (bass/vocals) met across the table at a party. Steven Tronc was recruited for drums and Jacinta Walker (guitar/vocals) was rounded up after a conversation and much cigarette smoking in the toilets of Fortitude Valley pub, the Waterloo.
