  • Music that I (don't) relate to.

    7 May 2008, 04:36 by pianorocklovexx

I’ve been spending a decent amount of time trying to find lyrics that describe me. I’ve been failing miserably. I can hardly relate to most of the music I listen to, for numerous reasons. The whole reason I listen to happy music (ie The Rocket Summer) is because I can’t relate to all the shit/drama/whatever that most musicians tend to write about. I’d consider myself to be a happy person. I’m by no means the type that is beaming with joy – I’m a cynic, a skeptic, and a realist (I don’t believe I’m a pessimist, although one would assume I would be based on the other two traits just mentioned). However, I don’t really have much to complain about in my life (my biggest complaint is being home for the summer, and the boredom which has ensued, which is why I’m even writing this).

It’s really hard for me to find music that appeals to me both musically and lyrically. I mean, I like freaking All Time Low and Forever the Sickest Kids. How the hell am I supposed to find somewhat meaningful lyrics there? I love how they sound, but sometimes it’s kind of hard not to cringe when I read their lyrics.

The Rocket Summer’s lyrics stick out to me, and I see something positive and sweet in them, but I don’t really relate. Also, the fact that there are so many Christian themes in his music makes it difficult for me. I think a lot of the reason that I didn’t listen to TRS for a long time was because I had read that he was a Christian artist. I don’t consider him to be, and he isn’t marketed that way, but he definitely talks about his faith in the music. Sometimes it’s easy to ignore, like in “PlayAround the Clock”, which can be either taken as a love song or (I guess also) a love song about God/Jesus/whatever. But on some songs, like “PlayTV Family” there is no hiding from it. That’s cool and all, but since I’m not Christian, I can’t relate.

At one time, I felt like I could really relate to “North” by Something Corporate. That album came out at the perfect time for me, and that timing really made that album what it is for me. I would kill to be able to relate to that album again. But, alas, I can’t even relate to my favorite band anymore, with maybe a song or two as an exception.

I’ve been starting to listen to a lot of Backseat Goodbye again, mainly because he just released a new album (which is impossible to get a hold of right now because it isn’t even available on iTunes yet, meaning I can’t illegally download it anywhere, but I digress). I’m pretty sure relating to that album is my goal in life – seriously, if my life were like a Backseat Goodbye album, I’d have the happiest life ever. All of his lyrics are just so painfully sweet (although the songs on each album get pretty repetitious in regards to their themes/some random specific things he mentions in multiple songs), but I definitely can’t relate (except when he sings about liking The Rocket Summer, duh)…probably of all years of my life, this year the least (although some may argue that being almost entirely apathetic about almost being in a relationship with someone is painfully sweet lol, but I digress yet again).

I sometimes come across lyrics that really stick out to me, for one reason for another. For example, one of my favorite verses from any song ever comes from “PlayTimorous Me” by Ted Leo and The Pharmacists(“Me and Timory holdin' hands/
I was shakin' hers, ‘cause she said she was a fan/
There was an awkward pause, and something that should’ve began
Just passed us by.) I am in love with that verse, I feel like I can relate to it (probably a lot, actually), but … I don’t know. It still feels like something is missing.

This has gotten really long winded, and I’m not really sure why I started writing this, besides for the fact that there isn’t anything else for me to be doing. Basically, I really need to find music that I can relate to, because “Uh huh/We're doing it
/Way too well/Uh huh/We're doing it/We're getting and getting it done” ("PlayUh Huh" Forever The Sickest Kids, btw) just isn’t cutting it for me.

Step 3: Comment with song title and artist.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
