“Take Me” is the first official Aly & AJ release after a 10 year hiatus. This song not only marks a comeback for the duo, but also presents a totally new sound. Inspired by the 80s synth pop craze, “Take Me” has a catchy synth driven chorus with some added instrumentation to make it sound and feel fresh. The lyrics have a youthful vibe: the singer wants her love interest to make the first move, but he doesn’t seem to be picking up the hints. And as evident in the chorus, she is sick of waiting.
After its accidental release on June 2nd (with a different artwork), the duo quickly took it off of Spotify and promised new music was coming soon. Then, on July 21st they announced the official release of the song for August 18, 2017.
AJ Michalka told The Le Sigh that the song is about her frustrations with modern day dating. "‘Take Me’ for us is kind of one of those songs that’s just very honest. It’s not really written about anyone in particular, just the fact that I’ve been going through the dating scene a little bit. Aly is married, but I’ve seen what I’ve gone through in the sense of just trying to meet someone that can be bold enough to take you out and want to get to know you beyond getting to know you on social media. It’s kind of hard to find. At the end of the day, it was one of those frustrations in the studio where it was like, ‘Just take me out already. If you want to get this done and want to get to know each other, you’re going to have to get to know me first.’ It’s an honest depiction toward my dating life, just really saying, 'If this is what you want, make it happen.‘ I think that song is a really honest moment for us."
