Born on the 30th September 1937 in Kyiv, Ukraine, Silvestrov began private music lessons at the age of fifteen. He studied piano at the Kyiv Evening Music School from 1955 to 1958, then at the Kyiv Conservatory from 1958 to 1964; composition under Borys Lyatoshynsky, harmony and counterpoint under Levko Revutsky.
