In 1996, several years after David Geffen sold Geffen Records to MCA Inc., he joined Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg to form DreamWorks SKG, with subsidiary DreamWorks Records. The DreamWorks Records logo was the last project completed by artist Roy Lichtenstein.

Rufus Wainwright was the first to be signed to the new label in early 1996. George Michael, Randy Newman, Morphine, Eels, and others were also signed to the label.

The label was presided over by Lenny Waronker and Mo Ostin, who ran Warner Bros. Records until the mid-1990s and were forced out of that label during the shake-up of the management of the WEA labels during that time.

DreamWorks Records never lived up to expectations and was sold in October 2003 to Universal Music Group, which operated the label as DreamWorks Nashville Records until August 31, 2005, when it was shut down.

Most of DreamWorks’ former artist roster was absorbed into Geffen Records at the same time, which included Nelly Furtado, AFI, Elliott Smith, and Rise Against.
