Creation Records was a British indie record label headed by Alan McGee, lasting from 1984 to 2000. The name came from the 1960s band The Creation, whom McGee greatly admired (McGee’s own band was called Biff Bang Pow!, also a Creation song). From the early 1990s on, however, its ‘independent’ status was severely compromised, since financial difficulties forced it into partnership with Sony.

During its existence Creation’s roster featured some of the leading lights of British ‘indie’ music, including The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Fluke, Swervedriver, Slowdive, The House of Love, Teenage Fanclub, Saint Etienne, Primal Scream, Super Furry Animals, The Telescopes, The Boo Radleys, 18 Wheeler and most notably, Oasis. It also launched subsidiary Rev-ola Records for cult reissues.

Since the dissolution of Creation Records in 2000 McGee has been running the Poptones label, which has seen a return to the staunchly independent roots of Creation. Most notably, Poptones launched the career of The Hives in the UK.
